What began as a poetry open mic night in 2023 has since grown into one of Worcester’s most vibrant and inclusive creative festivals. Speak Volumes is more than just an event — it’s a movement, a platform, and a celebration of voices that deserve to be heard. We spoke to Freddie Barker, Founder of Speak Volumes to find out what it’s all about and what went on this year!

The Inspiration Behind the Festival

Speak Volumes is a student-powered celebration of creativity, inclusion, and expression. Its roots trace back to World Poetry Day at The Arches, where a passionate group of students from the University of Worcester’s Poetry Society brought the idea to life. From the beginning, students have led the charge: planning the event, volunteering, performing original poetry, and even selling their own handmade arts and crafts. It’s a festival made by students, for students — and for anyone who believes in the power of accessible, unpretentious art.

What Does “Speak Volumes” Mean?

The name says it all. Speak Volumes is about creating a space where emerging and underrepresented artists can SPEAK UP, SPEAK OUT, AND BE HEARD. It’s a celebration of bold ideas and alternative formats — where poetry might ditch traditional rhythms, and art might be made with unusual techniques or tactile materials. No matter your background, Speak Volumes is about making sure your voice matters and your creativity is valued.

What’s the Vibe?

In a word: different.

Speak Volumes is colourful, contemporary, affordable, and wildly fun. It’s not your typical gallery or literary festival — and that’s the point. Whether you’re on the hunt for a handmade gift, vibrant artwork for your dorm, or quirky stickers for your laptop, the gallery marketplace offers something unique and full of personality. This year’s bestsellers included nostalgia-inspired earrings, tufted “mug rug” coasters, zines, scrapbooking kits, and original art — all handmade by local talent.

From Concept to Reality

None of this would be possible without the vision and commitment of Festival Director Freddie Barker and a team of dedicated volunteers. As a disabled-led event, Speak Volumes often takes extra time and care in planning — but that’s part of what makes it so special. Thanks to funding from Arts Council England and The National Lottery, the festival remains free to attend, ensuring financial accessibility for everyone.

Highlights from the 2025 Festival

The 2025 edition expanded in scope and ambition, featuring:

  • 12 Free Workshops: From flower crowns to zines, wire-wrapping to life drawing, every session was full — offering people the chance to explore new skills while also employing student and emerging artist facilitators.

  • 5 Live Music Performances

  • A Poetry Slam & Book Launch

  • A Photography Competition with a £500 Prize

  • An Inclusive Art Gallery featuring 50+ artists who identify as:

    • Local to Worcestershire

    • Aged 16–30

    • Disabled and/or chronically ill

    • Neurodivergent

    • Current or former University of Worcester students

Two standout installations from blind and visually impaired artists were major crowd-pleasers:

  • ORANGE by Ella Abel — a five-metre, climb-inside orange with squishy slices, waxy peel, and scented diffusers.

  • (Dis)Connected by Jodie Rose McLoughlin — a tactile walk through retro tech and childhood nostalgia, exploring themes of digital exclusion and connection.

How Do Artists Get Involved?

Most of them just reach out! While space is limited, Speak Volumes is all about encouragement, not gatekeeping. The goal is to include as many artists as possible and to offer first-time opportunities for creative minds who might otherwise be overlooked.

The Impact

Speak Volumes is about more than showcasing talent — it’s about breaking down barriers. Many artists and attendees said they’d never been able to access arts opportunities like this before, due to cost, location, or accessibility. This festival levels the playing field, supports local talent, and builds a community around joy, creativity, and inclusivity.

As one festivalgoer put it:

“Affordability is such a barrier within the arts. Speak Volumes really helps level the playing field and allows creatives to express themselves AND engage with practices they otherwise might not be able to.”
